I just made 4 gallons of laundry detergent and it smells wonderful!! It is so easy and only takes a few minutes to save a large “load.” I do 15+ loads of laundry a week and I have been VERY pleased with the quality of this detergent over the past 1 1/2 years.
Here’s the scoop to make 4 gallons of detergent:
- You will need 2 bars of Ivory soap or 1 bar of Fels Naptha
- 1 c. washing soda (not baking soda) – found in laundry aisle
- 1 c. Borax Powder – found in laundry aisle
- Purex Crystals (are another brand of the same item) – optional
- Lots of water
1. Grate 1 bar of Ivory soap or 1/2 bar of Fels Naptha and put in a large pot. Add 6 cups of water. If you want your detergent to smell wonderful, add 3 T of Purex Crystals. Heat on medium and stir until soap and crystals dissolve.
2. Add 1/2 c. washing soda and 1/2 c. borax powder to the pot and stir until dissolved.
3. Pour detergent into a 4 gallon bucket and add 4 c. hot water. Stir until blended.
4. Repeat steps 1-3.
5. Add 2 gallons and 12 cups of water (44 cups) to bucket and stir. Let the detergent sit for 24 hours – it will turn into a gel.
6. Use 1/2 c. per large load. I also put one scoop of laundry booster into my washer to keep my clothes extra clean.
